Discover the Largest Collection of Roses in the World - The Europa-Rosarium
The town of roses and mining – idyllically situated in the southern Harz Mountains region – has got the biggest rose collection in the world, the EUROPA-ROSARIUM. The ROSARIUM was founded in 1903 and has today an area of ca. 12.5 ha where more than 8,300 species of roses can be admired. Roses from all over the world and from different centuries are shown. Each year some areas are newly designed to preserve historical rose species, which partly are threatened by extinction, and to show new roses. All species are cultivated by very enthusiastic gardeners.
75,000 roses with millions of blossoms and a unique ensemble of scents and colours compete during the main blossom time. About 300 different species of trees and bushes form a wonderful background for the rose blossoms. The unique collection of climbing roses is very famous. They are bound as pyramids or columns and give the park a very special atmosphere. Attractions like the “Green Rose”, the “Black Rose”, moss roses, the original oil rose, the smallest roses in the world and roses from Goethe’s garden are to be seen here.
In 1993 the ROSARIUM was awarded the title “EUROPA-ROSARIUM” and Sangerhausen officially became the “Town of Roses” in the “Society of the Friends of Roses”.
The Europa-Rosarium takes a leading role in the project „Gartenträume“ in Saxony-Anhalt.
